Valley

Jeanette Kotowich

Work in Development

Valley is a multi-layered and innovative dance work, choreographed and performed by Jeanette Kotowich. It is deeply tied to kisiskâciwan, the “fast flowing” landscape of Saskatchewan. A creative returning to land, body, and identity; the work unfolds out of the robust and undulating land of my grandmothers, mothers, and great-great grandfathers.

Valley takes the audience on a journey, where traces are left behind as forward moving moments arise. Body, image, prop, and soundscape unravel through time and space, referencing the last continental glacial retreat some 14,000 years ago; cutting deep into the earth, depositing nutrient rich sediment, and leaving behind the valley’s characteristic meandering river. Native grasslands blanket the outer edge of the valley and salute the sun, while tree covered coulees snake into the slopes adding to their shade and protection. The 2-kilometer wide and 180-metre deep valley, as a sacred place calls generations of First Nations people for gathering, hunting, and spiritual replenishment.

Jeanette Kotowich is a Vancouver based professional contemporary Aboriginal dance and performing artist and choreographer. She holds her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Simon Fraser University, BC. Jeanette is a seasonal dancer with Dancers of Damelahamid, Raven Spirit Dance, V’ni Dansi, and creates her own work as an independent artist. As an independent artist and choreographer, she is currently creating a new work and collaborating with New Zealand based Maroi choreographer Charles Koroneho (Te Toki Ha-ruru), and has worked with Vancouver based dance artist Deanna Peters (Mutable Subject). Jeanette co-ordinates for the annual Coastal First Nations Dance Festival, a member of the Full Circle First Nations Performing Arts Ensemble, the Indigenous Performing Art Alliance & a founding board member/secretary for Savage Society. Honoring her Cree Métis heritage (originally from Saskatchewan) as a source of inspiration and reference point in her work, Jeanette is passionate about investigating a blend of contemporary and Indigenous practices.
