Vital Few

Company 605

Vital Few is a new work created with and for six unique performers; a collaborative undertaking utilizing mechanisms of constant codependence and interrelation between the dancers. Each performer’s own distinct expression, movement, and choice making weaves together to collectively build the moving sculpture of the group body, the whole greater than the sum of its parts. Acknowledging autonomy and responsibility to the group, the struggle of coexistence within the set parameters and finite space continuously informs the content of this hyper-connected dance. The work pushes the company into new physical territory to further explore the essence of unison and togetherness, the negotiation of group dynamics, and the preservation of self inside the collective consciousness

Led by artistic co-directors Lisa Gelley and Josh Martin, Company 605 is dedicated to producing new dance work through a shared creative process. As part of a generation of creators inspired by the merging of urban and contemporary forms, 605 places emphasis on movement innovation and physically demanding works, valuing collaboration as an essential tool for new directions in dance.

605 remains an ongoing exchange between separate people, bodies and ideas, celebrating the tension created through their attempt to co-exist. Each project explores new paths and creative methods to build powerful and engaging performances, juxtaposing raw with precision, and highlighting effort, risk and interconnection. Through constant collaboration with all involved artists and performers, Company 605 continues to push into new territory and awaken a fresh and ever-evolving aesthetic, together building a highly athletic art form derived from the human experience.

With every work that Company 605 has produced, extensive dissemination has always been a goal. The objective of Company 605’s touring is to create further opportunities for the artists to share and connect with as broad and diverse an audience as possible. Consideration is given to ensure that pieces can be adaptable to both large and small venues in order to tour in a variety of locations and contexts, and reach many communities – both remote and large.

While on tour Company 605 members will make themselves available to lead workshops and master classes, and to take part in artist chats.
